Myanmar Protest Signs
On February 1st, 2021. Myanmar (Burma) was taken over in a coup by its military (Tatmadaw) and the National League for Democracy (NLD) was deposed. Myint Swe, previously the vice president is now acting president and called a state of emergency for one year. The commander in chief, Min Aung Hlaing, is mainly responsible for the coup. Hlaing, along with the Tatmadaw declared the election results invalid. By April 21, 2021, over 700 civilians have been killed, over 3000 detained and several NLD members have been murdered in police custody. Earlier in the month of November 2021, the death toll has reached over 1000 civilian deaths.
The nation is standing up in solidarity, resisting the takeover. My “so” who was born in Myanmar wanted to protest at the Myanmar consulate in SF so I designed these signs, one being the flag of Myanmar, and the second showing silhouettes of the former president, Win Myint (lower) and Aung San Suu Kyi, NLD senator (upper). Aung San Suu Kyi is quite famous and could be considered the main reason Myanmar ever got democracy in the first place. The three palace building represent the three finger resistance salute that has been adopted by civilians, as seen in The Hunger Games movie series. In my “Other Works Tab” you can see an installation piece I did for this event as well.
